Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I want to begin by expressing what an honor it is to serve as your pastor. Over the past few months, I have seen the hand of God at work in our midst and have been truly blessed to see so many strong leaders and compassionate servants here at Marshall First. These are truly exciting days to be serving the Lord at Marshall First United Methodist Church. There are so many wonderful ministries taking place and ever-expanding opportunities to get involved in various ways for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God.

God has blessed each one of us with a special set of interests, gifts, and abilities, which He intends for us to use primarily for His glory, but also for the good of those within our sphere of influence. God has provided each and every person gifts necessary to fill the various roles of ministry in our local congregation. The only question is how will you respond to the call of God on your life to serve Him through His church.

This survey is a tool to help you and the nominations/Lay Leadership Development committee to determine where your interests and gifts fit into the work of the church through our committees, boards, and ministry teams. The nominations/Lay Leadership Development committee and I are asking each member and constituent/attender at or over the age of eighteen to complete this discernment tool. Additional copies are available in the church office or online at https://marshallfumc.org/ should you need them. We are confident God has a place for each and every one of us, so we are asking you to take some time to pray about where God would have you serve and submit or bring this completed survey back to the church ASAP. Our Charge Conference is Sunday, October 15th .

At the end of each year, our Nominating/Lay Leadership Development Committee works hard to make sure our committees and ministry teams are ready for a new year and fill spots as needed with individuals that have the gifts and graces for and desire to serve in those areas. Church Council: The Church Council is a group of church members elected to serve as leaders in the church. The purpose of the Council is two-fold. The first purpose is to be big picture thinkers. They plan, evaluate, and implement the ministries of the church to ensure we are living into our mission and vision as a Church. The Council is instituted by the Book of Discipline of the UMC, which establishes foundational rules, structure, and processes throughout the denomination. The council functions as the administrative agency of the charge conference. ¶ 252 - 2016 Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church. The Council is made up of Committee and Team Chairs or representatives, in addition to representatives of different ministries, staff, and those elected as at-large members. The Council typically meets once a month on the 4 th Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Committee on Nominations and Lay Leadership Development identifies, develops, deploys, evaluates, and monitors the development of church spiritual lay leadership. Recommends people to the Charge Conference to serve as officers, leaders, committee members, and committee chairs. The Committee normally begins their work in the summer completing their work before the Charge Conference in the Fall. The committee may also meet other times of the year to fill vacancies in leadership. ¶ 258.1 BOD 2016 Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee: SPRC builds a strong positive relationship between staff and the church members to make sure that the relationship between the church members and the paid staff is a healthy one. • Serves as a sounding board for the directing pastor. • Serves as the intermediary between staff members. • In consultation with the directing pastor works to fill staffing positions as needed. • This committee will work with the lead pastor and other staff to fulfill legal and ethical responsibilities related to staff. • Annually recommends to the charge conference the salary for the pastor and other staff. ¶ 258.2 BOD 2016 The Committee typically meets once a month on the 2 nd Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Board of Trustees functions as Christian stewards of property God has entrusted to the congregation. This includes supervising and maintaining both the physical property of the congregation and gifts, or trust given to the congregation so that the ministries of the congregation can be effective, and all legal requirements related to the property are satisfied. ¶ 258.3 ¶ 2525- 2552 BOD 2016 The Board typically meets once a month on the 3 rd Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Finance Committee The finance committee proposes a budget; then raises, manages, and distributes the financial resources of the congregation to support and strengthen the mission and ministry of the congregation. ¶ 258.4 BOD 2016 The Committee typically meets once a month on the 3 rd Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Scholarship committee has the privilege of blessing church members with the ability to continue their education through monetary gifts. The Memorial Committee oversees the Memorial Fund receiving, taking, and deciding how to spend monies given by family, friends, and fellow church members in memory of a loved one, church member, or a community member who has gone on to be with our Lord and Savior. Nurture Ministry Team coordinates, plans, carries out, and evaluates the congregation’s ministry in the areas of member care, worship, and educational experiences, including the church school, small groups, regular and special worship services, stewardship formation, and member visitation. ¶ 252.2,a BOD 2016 The Outreach Team focuses on loving the people outside of the Marshall First UMC family. This team is responsible for coordinating our outreach efforts. ¶ 252.2,b BOD 2016 The witness team coordinates, plans, carries out, and evaluates the congregation’s witness ministries, helping all know and respond to the love of God in Christ. This includes planning evangelistic outreach and setting goals for congregational growth, visitation, and membership care.

Church Council Chairperson: An effective chairperson provides initiative, coordination, and collaborative leadership for the congregational group that does planning, goal setting, implementation, and evaluation of ministry to fulfill the mission and vision of the congregation. Board of Trustees Chairperson: This leader guides the work of the trustees throughout the year, including preparing and communicating the agenda for meetings, leading the meetings, following up on plans by assigning responsibility for implementation and coordinating both routine and special maintenance of church property, including endowments, trust funds, and gifts made to the congregation. Finance Committee Chairperson: The finance chair works with the Church council chair, The Pastor, the church staff, and other ministry leaders to fulfill the mission of the church. The finance chair works with the trustees to handle designated gifts and bequests in accordance with The Book of Discipline. This person will guide the work of the finance team through the year, including planning agendas and presiding at meetings. Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Chairperson: The chair is the congregation’s primary connection with the district superintendent and bishop related to the appointed leadership of the congregation. This individual leads the committee by preparing and communicating the agenda for meetings, leading the meetings, and following up on actions by assigning responsibility for implementation. This person acts as one of the primary advisers for the pastor and should have a good working relationship with the pastor. In consultation with the pastor this person coordinates the work of the Staff Parish Relations Committee when hiring and evaluating non-appointed staff. Lay Leader: An effective lay leader functions as the primary representative and role model of Christian discipleship and faith lived out in the church and in daily life. This person acts as one of the primary advisers for the pastor and should have a good working relationship with the pastor. The lay leader works with the pastor to fulfill the mission and vision of the congregation. The Lay Leader ex-official member of all committees and ministry teams with voice and vote except where the book of discipline does not allow the leader to vote. Lay Member of Annual Conference: An effective lay member of annual conference informs the congregation about The United Methodist Church in the conference and around the world. This person attends annual conference sessions as a member from the congregation and interprets the actions to the congregation. An effective lay member builds the connection between the congregation and all United Methodist churches. An effective lay member is especially interested in connecting the church of God with people who are not yet part of it. In preparing for Annual Conference sessions the Lay Member should study all resolutions and proposals and all biblical implications involved and the issues before the conference. As an elected representative of the congregation, this person needs to be aware of the views of the congregation as a whole and vote with the knowledge in mind. Nurture Ministry Team Coordinator: Leads and coordinates the work of the nurture ministry team. Outreach Ministry Team Coordinator: Leads and coordinates the work of the outreach ministry team. Witness Ministry Team Coordinator: Leads and coordinates the work of the witness ministry team. Membership Secretary: Worship Attendance: Record each week’s total worship attendance in Breeze. Membership Records: Record all membership changes in Breeze throughout the year, including births, deaths, funerals, baptisms, confirmation, transfers, etc., and keep hard copies to support. AC Stats Report: Working with church secretary, complete membership section of annual AC Stats report. Membership Cultivation: compile list of those members who have not attended worship since last Charge Conference, contacting them to inquire about their membership status. End of Year Report (Vital Signs?): Complete portions of the conference year-end report with the secretary. United Methodist Men’s Coordinator/President: This leader works with the men of the congregation and community to developing programs and ministries relevant to men. Programs and ministries that encourage men to biblical masculinity and responsibility. Encourages men in daily discipleship including prayer and scripture. Encourages and supports spiritual growth, mission, outreach, prayer, evangelism and faith development. United Women in Faith Coordinator/Presiden t This leader has the responsibilities of advocating for ministry to women within the congregation and to seek ways to reach out to women within the community. Is a person of faith who is a committed disciple of Jesus Christ, has a servant’s heart, and is committed to the ministries of the church. This leader maintains a growing and healthy spiritual life and lead others to do the same. Encourages women in daily discipleship including prayer and scripture. Encourages and supports spiritual growth, mission, outreach, prayer, evangelism and faith development. Church School Superintendent In consultation and cooperation with the pastor and director of children and youth ministries, the church school Superintendent will coordinate and implement the various small-group ministries of a congregation, including the church school, weekday groups, and offsite groups that are designed so that a congregation will have an effective ministry of nurturing Christian faith, building Christian community, and equipping people of all ages for ministry as Christian disciples in daily life. Prayer Coordinator An effective leader will help the congregation recognize that prayer is essential to a life of Christian discipleship. The congregation will become stronger in the spiritual practice of prayer. The congregation will be led by God’s Spirit in fulfilling the mission of making disciples for the transformation of the world. • This leader will maintain a growing and healthy spiritual life and will lead others to do the same. • This advocate will work with others to coordinate the planning and implementation of a comprehensive prayer ministry for the congregation. • This leader will identify, equip, and support people who are praying for all aspects of congregational life as well as for the overall goals of the congregation.
